![]() English parents have long used the tail of “Jenny Greenteeth,” who drags children down into a watery grave to keep adventurous children away from water where they might stumble in. The ghostly wails of a woman warning of impending death also share similarities with the Irish banshees. The legend of a vengeful mother who slays her own offspring can be traced all the way back to Medea of Greek mythology, who killed her sons after being betrayed by her husband Jason. However, it is possible that the Europeans did bring the seeds of the legend of La Llorona from their homeland. There is no evidence that the historic La Malinche - who did in fact exist - killed her children or was exiled by her people. Despised now by her own people, it is said that La Malinche murdered Cortés’ spawn in vengeance. The conquistador left her after she gave birth and instead married a Spanish woman. According to this version of the tale, La Llorona was actually La Malinche, a native woman who served as an interpreter, guide, and later mistress to Hernán Cortés during his conquest of Mexico. Wikimedia Commons In some versions of the story, La Llorona is actually La Malinche, the native woman who assisted Hernán Cortés.Īn entirely different origin story coincides with the arrival of the Spanish in America back in the 16th century. In order to honor her, the Aztecs sacrificed children. One such goddess is known as Cihuacōātl or “Snake Woman,” who has been described as “a savage beast and an evil omen” who wears white, walks about at night, and constantly cries.Īnother goddess is that of Chalchiuhtlicue or “the Jade-skirted one” who oversaw the waters and was greatly feared because she allegedly would drown people. She has been connected to the Aztecs as one of ten omens predicting the conquest of Mexico or as a fearsome goddess. Mentions of La Llorona can be traced back over four centuries, although the origins of the tale have been lost to time. The tale has various retellings and origins, but La Llorona is always described as a willowy white figure who appears near the water wailing for her children. The legend of La Llorona translates to “The Weeping Woman,” and is popular throughout the southwestern United States and Mexico. For our main desktops we’ve installed large hard drives (often the old ones from our NAS units as we upgrade them to larger drives) where we store a similar set of backups for redundancy. These are stored on our primary Synology NAS. For the system drives on our Windows computers, we run Easeus Todo Backup with Full backups at least once a week, and incrementals every morning. David Cardinalįor our home-based business, we use parallel backup strategies for our systems and data. Our next upgrade, as soon as we can afford it, is to move the sample and project drives entirely to SSDs and Thunderbolt connections, though it’s going to be a while before we can swing that. Over the years, I’ve reorganized our recording and post-production studio several times, as we’ve added and subtracted PCs and devices. Finally, we’ve got several extra 1TB and 2TB USB drives that we use for occasional large backups, to ensure if anything catastrophic happens we’ve always got those to fall back on - though at this point, I’m thinking of trying one of David Cardinal’s NAS setups the more photos we take. The team's defensive weaknesses seem to be defensive havoc rate and standard down sack rate. If he is going to be a consistent contributor in the offense going forward it gives us a look on the outside that has been missing all year.Ĥ. He is a big 6’3” outside receiver that can stretch the field with his speed. Burgess is a former pro baseball player who walked on two years ago and played a little under Hazell, but until last week hadn’t even seen the field. Last week Jarrett Burgess came out of nowhere two have three nice downfield catches and that would be a huge offensive boost. On offense, we need the receivers to catch passes. If we can get both back it would be a huge boost to a defense that is already playing pretty well. ![]() McCollum is the type that stuffs the hole Gus Edwards had on Rutgers’ long TD run or makes a play to stop one of Nebraska’s late drives. We could really use him back as well as linebacker TJ McCollum, who was out leading tackler before getting hurt against Minnesota. The Cornhuskers picked Kamal hardy, his replacement, apart. Da’Wan Hunte, our top corner, missed the Illinois game and the second half against Nebraska. Purdue’s secondary is a concern right now. Offensive and defensive X-Factors in this game? (highest variance performers) Injuries to key defenders played a big role in the late rally by Nebraska and we really should have beaten Rutgers if not for a horrible day by our receivers.ģ. Overall though, he has done a fantastic job. I understand the logic, as we needed a TD, but if he kicks there we’re down 5 and the last minute TD wins it. Also, midway through the fourth quarter he decided to go for it down 8 at the Rutgers 30 on 4 th down. The only game where I have to criticize Brohm in some playcalls is at Rutgers, where the running game was working but there were a few crucial points where he still went to the air when we had all the drops. We were also competitive at Wisconsin and even Michigan, who beat us by 18, didn’t pull away until the fourth quarter. We needed a stop at Nebraska and a two-point conversion at Rutgers. We’re 4-5 and we’re about 2-3 plays away from being at least 6-3. Not only did he never make adjustments, it never seemed like he had a plan.īrohm has this team playing about as well as possible considering the talent gap we have due to Hazell’s poor recruiting. You could never say that about Darrell Hazell. ![]() He has had us in every game so far, and he continues to adjust a game plan based on what he has instead of his system. This question was inevitable, but how would you grade Jeff Brohm's performance so far? Is Purdue better than its record?īrohm has been a breath of fresh air because he has made adjustments and he has done everything possible to get a measure of success from this team. He is not coming in totally raw and he has done some good things this year.Ģ. Even Coach Brohm has said that Sindelar is probably the better QB if we had different players around him, but Blough was better for what we had. He has a great arm, but he is still in the “throw as hard as you can” mode. The biggest thing Sindelar needs to learn is to put a little more touch on his passes. If the receivers have a better day we beat Rutgers and Sindelar may have started against Nebraska. It was especially bad against Rutgers, as he played most of the game and we had a rash of drops. Part of Sindelar’s accuracy issues have come from drops by his receivers. Blough had secured the starting role because of his accuracy and because he was more elusive in the pocket and a better runner. With Blough out for the season, what can we expect from Sindelar this weekend? Is he as passable as he was to start the year? Thanks to Hammer and Rails for doing this.ġ. We talked to Travis Milller of Hammer and Rails, the Purdue SB Nation site, about the game. Northwestern is looking to make it five wins in a row while Purdue is desperately searching for a win to take it closer to bowl eligibility. Northwestern and Purdue will square off in an extremely rare Northwestern home night game in November. ![]() No US government officials have been held accountable for creating, authorizing, or implementing the CIA’s secret detention and torture programs. Moreover, although President Barack Obama declared an end to secret detention and torture upon taking office in 2009, cruel and unlawful US counterterrorism practices adopted in response to 9/11 continue to this day, as do their repercussions. Today, even when the US decries unlawful practices abroad, it appears to have lost the moral authority that might compel other countries to curb them. For example, the 2012 blockbuster movie Zero Dark Thirty and a 2019 “interrogation” exhibit at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC – only partially revised after an outcry by human rights activists and lawmakers – trivialized the abuses inflicted on suspects and suggested, erroneously, that the torture worked. Popular culture has often glossed over the cruelty and failures of these measures. As a result, the five prisoners accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks have yet to be brought to trial, depriving them of due process and the survivors and the families of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks of their right to justice. The military commission system created to prosecute suspects at Guantánamo is fundamentally flawed. At least 39 of the men were subjected to “waterboarding,” “walling,” “rectal feeding” – a form of rape – and other forms of torture. With the participation of at least 54 governments, the CIA secretly and extrajudicially transferred at least 119 foreign Muslims from one foreign country to another for incommunicado detention and harsh interrogation at various CIA black sites.
